Conducting qualitative research on maternal morbidities: a manual
31 December 2025
| Manual
Overview
Pregnancy and childbirth are reproductive health events for which there are strong cultural norms and behavioural expectations, which vary between settings and social groups. Qualitative research is ideal for understanding these dynamics and has been underexploited in many settings without the training or resources to undertake this sometimes labourintensive task.
This manual is intended to support practitioners, researchers, programme staff and others concerned with addressing women’s experiences of maternal morbidities by providing an overview of how to research them and a set of adaptable tools that will work on their own or as part of larger mixedmethods exploration and measurement of maternal morbidity.
