Routine health information system and health facility data for neglected tropical diseases: Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis

Overview

This guidance was developed based on a template provided to health programmes by the WHO Division of Data, Analytics and Delivery for Impact. WHO regional advisers and disease focal points in the WHO Global Neglected Tropical Diseases Programme provided technical content in alignment with the road map. A drafting team comprising WHO technical officers and Taenia solium taeniasis and cysticercosis disease experts working at global, regional and country levels contributed to the writing and review of initial drafts of the document. Independent disease experts and selected national programme managers from endemic countries reviewed the guidance for technical accuracy and relevance.

This document focuses on the analysis, reporting and use of routine T. solium taeniasis and cysticercosis data collected at the health-facility level. It presents core facility-based indicators and analytical approaches, alongside proposed data-quality assessment questions, and key considerations and limitations related to the use and interpretation of these data.

By using this document, readers should be able to: describe core T. solium taeniasis and cysticercosis basic indicators and notable trends in incidence, prevalence, geographical distribution and progress towards control of the disease; monitor neurocysticercosis case management and disease surveillance; understand how to interpret changes in trends over time by age, sex and geographical location; assess data quality and understand its implications when interpreting data; and data reporting pathways at country level and to WHO.
